Best 33# off road tyres

Postby tassietriton on Sun Nov 29, 2009 3:41 pm

Hey all,

I am thinking about buying a second set of 16# rims (probably 16X7 Hummers) to fit some serious off road tyres to for when I go bush. My 20# rims and Cooper A/Ts are a little impractical for 4wding.

In Tassie by bush I mean mostly mud but also have in mind a trip to the far north at some point.

Any suggestions and/or recommendations from Newtriton members?

PS I thought of running a set of 34s but decided to go for a more common size in case I need to get a spare out the back of the nowhere.

If you want serious tyres for serious mud, have a look at the Silverstone MT117 Xtreme...

I would go for something like the Mickey Thompson MTZ, Very good tyre in mud when your out bush playing on the weekend. Your obviously a fan of coopers though, so thier STT tyre (i think) would be similar. For a one off trip to the NT of a few thousand kms, you wont pay the earth for either tyre, and they will still perform reasonably well while travelling on the blackstuff, while making your truck a weapon off road.

just my 2c worth.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

I run Dick cepek FC11's and have been very happy with both on and off road performance. When we went to loveday there was heaps of mud and they seemed to clean themselves very well in comparison to other types. The owner up there swears by the Mickey Thompson mtz's and tell's me he get's around 60k km's out of them. :?

Also check out the Federal Couragia if you want something more agressive. They are on special atm so you should be able to get a good deal. 8-)

MTZ are my choice..

Heard the new BFG KM2 is also good but not directly from anyone I know...

Its like buying sneakers... go with one of the various brands people mention here... cant go wrong with any of them really and we all have our favourites..

Don't know if I'd go muds for a trip to NT though?

Many miles of blacktop driving to get there.

I'd go MTZ's for what you described - decent in mud and a good allrounder.

For your local stuff i second blue on the silverstones - might even have a set of my own by tonight ;)

I'm still liking my kevlar MTR's
I bought them as a touring tyre, but after 15,000kms they are better than the MTZ's in everything I have thrown them at.

To look at, not your obvious hard core tyre, BUT found the pattern works.

if it's purely just for a play set then I'd second blues option of the silverstones, a bloke near me is doing them for $245 a tyre fitted and balanced but bear in mind most tyre manufacturers recommend an 8" rim for 33"s. I was about to get some silverstones for the tri but that's not to be. A mate that I go wheeling with had the 35" extremes and one thing we noticed was they don't really start to bag out until they're down to around 12 pound but once there they are unstoppable

edit- also in saying that I'm in the process of planning a new ride and it will be a toy that only gets used for trips and weekends away, it will be running 35" extremes

Procomp have a very good reputation for strength, resistance to punctures.

I have only heard good things of both the AT and MT, well apart from the cost.

Not sure on the 34" size specifically though. Must be available in a narrow 34" in order to fit with the 7.5" wide rims.

Thats going to be the trick, Narrow 34" (I only know of the simex range that have this) but others might have them???

only problem with the mt117 extremes is the lack of sizes for 16in rims- i was going for simex (as a 2nd offroad set) but then changed to either KM2 or MTZ. i ended up buying MTZ's from widetread, when you see the difference between sidewall strength on the tyres (generally the weakest point) your mind is made up pretty quick.
