MN Tyre Sizes All Over The Shop

Hi guys,

Firstly my apologies, as I know these topics are debated regularly and i HAVE searched this forum (and others) for answers but seem to be getting so many different opinions. I'm just wondering if I could get some cut and dry answers regarding the tyres on an MN GLX-R from someone that actually owns one - mine's not due for delivery for a few weeks yet, but I'm trying to sort out the accessories before it comes. I'll give you a quick summary of the questions I need answered before explaining why, so you don't get bored reading my novel

Summary:
What I need to know-
1. Width of MN GLX-R 17" Alloys - is it 7" or 7.5" -- Mitsubishi catalogue & newtriton forum members (other threads) say 7.5", tyre dealer & Mitsubishi parts guy says 7"
2. Does the GLX-R come with a full-size spare alloy?
3. What is the minimum load rating on the GLX-R for tyres -- apparently this is going to narrow my tyre choice by a fair bit... from what I could read on the tyre placard & Mitsubishi brochure it looks to be 111S - is this correct?
4. (Off topic) How many speakers in the GLX-R? Redbook and all the car review sites say 8, Mitsubishi brochure says 6, dealer says 8 but couldn't find the last 2 when I told him to show me...

Explanation:
From researching the various forums, reviews and catalogues available I was looking to upgrade the standard 245/65R17 Bridgestone H/Ts to something with a more aggressive (well A/T aggressive anyway )tread straight up. The car will be driven to work in the city during the week, and on weekends I'll be doing mainly gravel/sand runs to the islands and destinations around Brissy. Because of this I wasn't sure/confident that the H/T's would be sufficient - am I right??

I figure if I'm going to be changing the tread I may as well increase the size, but as you all know with the restrictions with tyres in Qld, I can only go 15mm larger in diameter over the 245/65R17 - and the most common increase within these parameters seems to be 255/65R17 (14mm increase) or 265/60R17 (0 increase in height, but wider again). From the information I've read it would be beneficial to find something with an LT construction... and this basically narrowed my search to the Bridgestone Dueler D694 A/T 255/65R17LT, which will set me back approx $1k after trade for 5 (F+B). Is this worth doing?

The reviews on the Bridgestones seem to be unreal - I can only see one or two people that haven't been happy (and I don't want to start another brand debate), but the dealers I've been to during the week have all tried to steer me away from them? One tried to push me toward the Cooper ATR, the other toward Yokohama Geolander AT-S..

My next issue is the width of the GLX-Rs alloys - can someone please give me the right answer as to what width is? The Triton brochure I've downloaded from the Mitsubishi website says the GLX-R's are 17x7.5 (GLR's are 17x7), but the tyre dealer's book said it was definitely width of 7". So I went to a Mitsu dealer to have a look, couldn't find it on the rim or on the tyre placard inside the door.. then the sales guy come out - once he found out I hadn't bought my Triton from there was the most unhelpful, rudest prick I've talked to, so I had to ring my Mitsu dealer and ask - but only the parts guys were available... he said on his computer it was only coming up with 7" width for Triton rims, so then I started searching back on here and there are threads going either ways as well... HELP! :? The only reason I ask is that the tyre dealer was recommending the 265/60R17, which he said he could only fit to a 7.5" rim - although the more I think about it, the lower profile wouldn't really be that good for bagging out over sand would it?

I'll leave it there for now - so many complaints about the service I'm receiving around the place for the accessories at the moment, but I'll save that for another thread! I'm pretty confident I'm going to love the Triton! Thanks for any help in advance :)

Re 2 - yes the spare is a full size alloy
Re 4 - there are 6, 2 tweeters in front, 2 main speakers in front doors, and 2x 3 way speakers in rear doors

I've seen it argued that a 3 way speaker counts as more than 1 speaker but as far as I am concerned that's just cheating. the main speakers are 40w in mine, not sure if they're any different as I have the MMCS but I dare say they are the same. replaced mine anyway although they weren't too bad for factory speakers.

to answer the rest I'd have too go outside and have a look I guess. will do so later if no one else chimes in with the answers, although tyres/rims a bit outside my areas of expertise...

Awesome - thanks for that C/Dave. No hurry with the tyre details, from reading the reviews so far it sounds pretty safe sticking with the 255/65R17LT Bridgestone D694 A/T's, at least I know they're definitely within the size/load limits, have a good track record and now I know I can just get 5 of the same 8-)

Yeah I was pretty confident it was only the 6 speakers - that'd be a joke for them to start counting 3 ways as multiple speakers... now just wish the standard GLX-R stereo had iPod compatibility!

Yeah I understand it has the auxiliary RCA inputs in the centre compartment, but then in addition to the audio cable, you need a separate cord to charge your ipod and the head unit isn't compatible, you can't use the buttons on the steering wheel to change songs etc, so you either have to have the cords coming out of the centre compartment to change songs (making it untidy), or use a plug in car kit using the cigarette lighter under the CD player, which I was going to use for other stuff like GPS etc..

From what I can tell, the GL-R has a USB aux input with iPod compatibility built-in to the head unit, just seems strange the model up doesn't :? and I can't justify paying the extra for the MMCS, then needing an additional cord anyway. Is there an iPod cable you can get for the GLX-R head unit?

Sorry - a little off topic in the tyres section - I shouldn't have brought it up

1. Width of MN GLX-R 17" Alloys - is it 7" or 7.5" -- Mitsubishi catalogue & newtriton forum members (other threads) say 7.5", tyre dealer & Mitsubishi parts guy says 7"
The MN GLX-R alloy wheel is definately 7.5" wide. The wheel description in the owners manual is "17x7 1/2J"
For reference, the ML GLX-R had 17x7 alloy wheels. Perhaps tyre dealer and parts guy where looking at old information.....

2. Does the GLX-R come with a full-size spare alloy?
Yes a full size spare wheel is fitted standard.

3. What is the minimum load rating on the GLX-R for tyres -- apparently this is going to narrow my tyre choice by a fair bit... from what I could read on the tyre placard & Mitsubishi brochure it looks to be 111S - is this correct?
Yes, 111S load rating is correct. The tyre description in the owners manual is "245/65R17 111S RF"

4. (Off topic) How many speakers in the GLX-R? Redbook and all the car review sites say 8, Mitsubishi brochure says 6, dealer says 8 but couldn't find the last 2 when I told him to show me...
The MN GLX-R has 6 speakers, in the locations previously mentioned. The late build ML GLX-R had 8 speakers. The Redbook and dealer were using old information.....

nice - thanks for all that info garage-tuner... now to decide on the tyres before the car turns up... I was pretty settled on the (QLD legal) D694 A/Ts until I saw the BFG KM2's on @revhead's new GLX-R

unfortunately I'd have to go just over the legal diameter to get any of the tyres I actually want (M/T ATZ or BFG KM2) - the insurance place said they'd still cover the tyres, but if the tyres were found to be the cause of an accident the car wouldn't be covered.... seriously what could an extra few mm's diameter do to cause an accident?

Is it worth the risk?

Is it worth the risk? Thats for you to decide, in the worst case senario you'll be at least 46k in debt if your insurance doesn't pay out. This for me, (as much as i wanted M/T 4 ribs) was enough to decide to put legal ones on just incase. Putting slightly larger tyres on wasn't worth the risk so i went 255/70 R16 instead of 265/75 R16.

Glad you asked the question g_mac. I'm in the same situation. Have tried to get AT 's fitted to my new MN GLX R. All dealers I've been to have said a 17" AT wasn't available without going for a larger tyre and risking insurance problems. I was considering changing rims to 16" with the obvious extra cost. I'll be of to a specialist Bridgestone dealer tomorrow. Good luck with your choice. on another forum there was a discussion re getting the dealer to swap the tyres over prior to pick up so that you didn't have the extra cost. Seems some dealers were up for it but the posts were from Sydney.Pity I didn't look before I got delivery of mine. Worth a try for you as the factory fitted are Bridgestone.

In the end I just decided to wear the factory ones out and see whether anything looks like happening with this so-called proposed ruling. I did quite a fair bit of research on the Bridgestone A/Ts... they seemed to get a pretty good wrap most places - I guess it all comes down to what terrain you're going to be driving the most... I wouldn't expect them to be performing fantastic in the mud  but for most other terrains they seem to do the job.

The latest 4wd action has a tyre comparo... the new bfg km2 muddies came up pretty good... they were the second quietest tyre on the road in the test - and that was out of H/Ts, A/Ts & M/Ts!!

I've got my fingers crossed that the ruling changes so I can get a set of these and keep her legal 8-)

Mate i can vouch for the D694's they are a great Tyre on and off road. you will not be dissapointed in there performace. If you do your part off road in regards to running correct pressures they will be great. I have had BFG's and Micky T MTZ on previous cars but after giving these a go on my mates advice (bridgestone manager) and a good price im happy i went down that road.

3 Weeks ago i did have a terrible weekend on them - i destroyed 2 tyres in 15 min. One was totally avoidable i was to lazy to drop tyre pressures (torrential rain) went with the she will be alright untill i get to the shed. down the extremely washed out Shlae track i heard that dreaded air leaking noise. Had piece if shale punch through right on the edge of the tread block and side wall... Had it been 5mm to the left could have plugged it.

The second was a tyre spike - deliberatley put there by persons unknown (On private property) pressumable by a poaching pig dogger who must have realised that the bowl of dog biscuits left at the shed contained a little more than vitamins and nutrients for his crew. It was a piece of plywood with 36 nails punched through it placed on a track then had dirt shoveled over the top.

Other than that mate they are a great tyre and have not had one fail me when i do the right thing by them. They have 45000km (swapped over from my replaced triton) on them and i can easily see them getting 90 000km to 100 000km from them. Tread depth was measued from the 2 remaining tyres to the new ones was 3.5mm difference.

Went and got a quote today for 265/65 17s and was point blank told by the tyre guy I only have 7' rims. Said no no the MN comes with 7.5' on all corners. Would not believe me until I showed him the MMAL site. He then showed me their tyre/rim manual for all major car manufacturers and guess what it says - 7".

Anyway once that was sorted he quoted $320 a corner which I thought was excessive...

Anyone running 265/65s on standard suspension I am interested in any change to:

gearing
Rubbing - I know they shouldn't
and fuel comsumption?

Cheers

Hi QueenslanderR

Sorry, a bit off track here, go into your nearest Harvey Norman shop tell them you have red and white RCA plugs that connect to you ipod, they will sell you a set of leads that will set you back about $20, they are even colour coded for dick heads like me so you cant plug in the wrong connection, I thought I was getting a six stacker CD same as my previous car however the GLXR only has a single play CD but with the RCA plugs in the centre console I use my ipod and have far more range of tunes than a 6 stacker CD.

Qld-R, mate... Can I ask where you found the legal specifications for Qld ? I've spent all arvo looking on the web & only found this doco on the QLD transport website - near to useless...

http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/safety/vehicle-standards-and-modifications/vehicle-modifications/light-vehicle-modifications/pdf_modification_motor_vehicles2.pdf

It says: "The tyre to rim fitting and the tyre to rim combination must be in accordance with the Tyre and Rim Standards
Manual published by the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia. Reputable tyre retailers should have this
information and be able to advise on the correct combinations."

Of course when you go here: http://www.tyreandrim.org.au/manual.html ...the document will cost you over $50.

I thought I had read somewhere that you could go an additional 25mm in diameter in QLD...

My understanding is that my '07 Ml with 16 inch rims are 7 inches wide - standard hoops are 245 70 16...

I want to get a set of Micky T - ATZ 5-Rib, The closest I can find in a 16 inch is a 265/75R16LT... Can I put a 75 on a 7 inch rim ? The dealer I was talking to didn't give me a straight answer ... So unless I get a set of 17 inch rims - which I believe are 7.5 inches, then a 265/70R17LT the only other 265 MT has in a 17 inch, will not work either...

Yes - mods - I did search here for about half an hour - but couldn't find much about MT ATZ's on 16 inch rims...

Any assistance - greatly appreciated , as ususal :)

Got that from the 50 places i went to for tyre quotes quinny, who stated the biggest i could go is 15mm either way (if i remember correctly). Next set for me is going to be 265/75 anyway, just for a bit more clearance. When i ended up getting my duelers, i asked for 265/70's but bridgestone wouldn't put they tyres on as they said they were legally obligated to fit tyres that were legal to my vehicle. If you head into fourbys down your way they have no problems putting 265's on your triton + they sell MT 5 ribs. I think on the mickey thompson website it may even tell you if a 265/75 will fit on a 7 inch rim.
