Srb, mate i'd say that's a once off freak occurance. The seal probably wasn't fitted properly in the first place. Some seals if they aren't seated home properly do have a tendency to back out.

Just bad luck. I hope the dealer looks after you on this one.

I had this exact thing happen on cyl no1 after the 30k service where the tappets were done. Obviously once disturbed the shithouse seal doesn't like to stay in position. It's a rubber backed lip seal. Similar to any common hydraulic single lip seal. I tapped it back in with a punch but it just slowly walked back out.

I've installed literally hundreds of this type of seal in my time as I work in hydraulics. The seal is similar to a rams main wiper lip seal. If it were a steel backed seal it would stay in the alloy rocker cover much better.

All I did was first clean everything up with brake cleaner so it's dry. Tapped the seal in with a skim of sealant and then lightly centerpunched the edge of the hole to steak the seal in. No problem there and nothing bodgy going on here. Just normal hydraulic practices.

Reckon I won't bother putting my cover back on (not on very often anyway) and keep a eye on these seals...
What would be the best product to use to "glue" these seals in :?:

Hay Alex, when you say centerpunch the edge of the hole, what happens when Mitu have to remove the seal to do the tappets? And then how would they put new seals in without damaging them?

Ok time for an update,
So i got the seal replaced under warranty no problems BUT.. My engine bay is still plastered in oil! :x :x
The service manager promised it was going to be fully degreased and cleaned up by their best technician? So yesterday i thought i'd inspect what sort of job he had done and to my horror oil still dripping from all places? I removed the plastic cover on top first and found oil still dripping out of felt lining and when i unbolted the bash guard's there was oil still dripping from the alternator, around all the pulley's and hoses every where. :x
I phoned the service place and told them i wasn't happy with the job and they said... (wait for it) ''Thats the best we can do'' WTF! Blind freddy could have done a better job with a piece of toilet paper! :x So i asked to speak with the service manager but she was in a meeting, have been waiting all day for a call back but she is too busy apparently to help me? All i want is a professional cleaning job done so's it like new again is that too much to ask you think?

So what should they do? Is degreaser going to fix this or do they need to get it steamed? If i was doing it i would have it degreased and then shampooed to make sure i remove all residue from the degreaser. Originally i told them i wanted it steam cleaned and they said they don't do that sort of thing and it's not in their system. I said fine as long as you clean it up like new i'll be happy. I can't believe i'm getting treated this way? This vehicle is brand new with only 2000k on the clock, and the engine bay looks totally second hand! THIS IS NOT OVER! Any suggestions on how to handle this?

Mate just take it in to the sales car park out the front of the dealership open the bonnet and show everyone walking into the dealership what the engine bay looks like after 2000km. I promise you they will get it sorted straight away. If they traded a car they wouldn't put it on the lot looking like that! It is well within their capabilities to clean they just can't be bothered!

A proper clean, new sound deadening, new belts and a big apology should be a bare minimum. Then toss in all new radiator and heater hoses as spares...

Coincidence?

Postby burnah on Wed Aug 31, 2011 5:35 pm

I'd demand they replace all the wiring in the bay as well. Oil can travel along and within stranded wire cable by capillary action. If a cut end is immersed it can work it's way through quite easily and against gravity. I once had oil dripping out of a thick stranded copper wire 10cm above and almost a metre away from the end that was immersed in oil. (home made tesla coil capacitor) :o
If nothing else they should at least check and clean all your connectors and terminals.

Ok 3rd time lucky i guess... This is a classic!

As you know i had a injector seal fail due to incorrect seating when assembled at the factory, they replaced the seal under warranty no prob's but failed to give my engine bay a good clean after oil was sprayed every where. :(
When i took it back and showed the service manager and asked again if they could clean it properly with a professional steam clean? No we can't do that cause it's not in our system, but don't worry i will make sure it goes to our BMW detailing service for a full engine de-greease. Ok i said but please insure they remove the plastic engine cover and the bash guards underneath to washes the all the sound deadening as well. So next day i leave it with them, they gave me a lone car for the day and i felt confident they would have it spotless when i return. That afternoon i came back and they assured me it was like new again and apologised for the inconvenience. Before i drove away i had a quick look, every thing looked good at first until i stuck my hand under the plastic cover and found oil still soaked into the felt, i removed the cover and found oil all over the top of the rocker cover that had dripped from the felt! :x I walked back inside to the service manager and squeezed oil out of the felt onto her desk and said WTF!? She didn't know what to say.
I said i want someone out here to remove the bash guards for a inspection under the engine. When they took the guards off there was oil still dripping from the power steering pipes and alternator? WTF? I then noticed that instead of cleaning the foam they just removed it? GUYS THIS IS A NEW CAR!! :x To be honest i wouldn't have worried about the foam if the engine bay was spotless but stuff it! they can now replace all the foam. The manager said she didn't know why it wasn't done properly and said she would follow it up first thing next day. I was pissed!

So the following week it finally got done right. :D 3rd time lucky and all the oil is gone! The foam on the bash plates is still on order but not really worried cause i installed my 3mm stainless bash plates yesterday.
I will never go back to any dealer for schedule service because of this now, just can't believe the lack of detail for such a simple thing? Where is the service? I wouldn't trust any dealer from now on. You can have ya stupid capped service and road side assist, i don't want it! :x

Thanks for listening ;)
