Diff & Gearbox Oil's

Postby santaclews on Sun Jun 14, 2009 7:49 am

Just wondering does any one know what Oil the dealers use and recommend for the diesel ML triton.
My preference was to use Delo 400 any comments on what is the best oil. I am changing oil and filter every 7500 K
Thanks Santa

So assuming it has to be factory stuff to keep the warranty Greedy?

That could be an area for debate should an issue arise. I just haven't changed it to anything else. Not even sure how often it should be changed.

I wondered whether it might be...and Im sure Mrs Bitchy would find a reason to blame it should an accident occur!

Im of the same thinking, I read somewhere it should be every 5000km's but still not sure if thats correct. The main reason I want to know, is because Im wondering whether I should get them to change it when my car goes in on Monday for the rebuild??

It's unusual to change diff and gearbox oils at all as far as I know. In 4wd's, I could understand regular changes as there is a greater chance of water contamination etc. but every 5000km. :?: What about those poor bastards that have to get it serviced professionally as they're inept with a spanner or knowhow? The service interval would be much too high. You now have me thinking so off to the service book I go. Turns out it's 45000km replacements for gearbox (manual and auto), both diffs and transfer case. You learn something new everyday. There is the usual disclaimer of 30000km for "severe" conditions.

Adz - Save your money. No need to change diff or gearbox oils until major service or you have concerns about contamination. Even then the dealers will sting you big time. Oils only need to meet the specs in the handbook, don't have to be any particular brand, to maintain warranty. Exception is coolant which is a weird one - careful you don't put the usual green stuff in.

Thanks 5th. :D

Is it the 15000km intervals that are the major services or is it further down the track? If it is the 15000km intervals then Im in luck cos they're doing that service for me as part of the engine rebuild. :D :D
If not then thats a different story.

I have heard this from a bloke that worked at mitsi's factory. For some reason, they have formulated their own coolant that's supposedly "special". My guess is to cover for the cheaparse metal the build the motors out of.

Hey Buzzy does that mean I can't talk about the coolant any more? Or can you change the thread to "Diff & Gearbox Oils & Coolant & Service Intervals & Learning Something Everyday & Scallops"?

My tame mechanic tells me that Mitsu is like Toyota. Better to use their stuff (even though they are different colours) than to run the risk of a warranty claim knockback even though the other coolant might be just as good, maybe better.

hi all i bought castrol synthetic gear oil for the diffs and castrol conventional oil gear oil for transfer case. The both diffs took 5 liters and the service manual stated 3.8L for both diffs. The transfer case took 3L and service manual stated it takes 2.5 L. I filled everything until the oil trickled out of the fill hole.
