Double Din unit X OEM Info center

Double Din unit X OEM Info center

Postby nelsonnrc on Mon Feb 09, 2009 12:23 pm

Hi there
This is my first post, my name is Nelson and I'm located in Brazil, just bought a 3.5 V6 Triton.
I'm gathering some info on double din units with gps, I want to reallocate the information center to the factory stereo, a single din space.
You guys think that's possible?

Question number 2:
7" or 6.5" head unit? Wich one will fit on the info center location?

Thanks!

Here is the photoshoped project

that's the same unit I have installed but I put my uhf in the stereo slot and the trip comuter is still sitting in the shed. The stereo won't sit flush within the shroud of the dash it sits about 20mm forward due to the vent duct behind there. If you want a neater fit some of the guys here have done the car computer thingo which looks neater

I moved the trip computer down to below the factory stereo...
I had to cut out the console and remove the cigarette lighter and the ashtray (thats ok 'cause I am an ex smoker :) )

See my profile pics...

Wow! That looks great
Do you know how deep that top console is? The head unit I'm looking into is about 19cm of depth

A carputer is another idea great idea 8-)

Welcome nelson, you'll find lots of members here with very neat double-DIN and/or carputer setups 8-)

Not sure of the actual depth that is available... it is pretty tight behind there... best if you check it out for yourself... remember when you remove the plastic surround of the trip computer pull it horizontally towards you, not upwards or you will bust the thing... :D

Welcome nelson. Your head unit looks almost the same as mine. See my Shed for a picture.

The head unit is a touch too long to fit perfectly (you need to allow for a lot of wires protruding from the rear)and the cover (which is purportedly "double DIN") isn't quite, so it will need some trimming. The original trip computer won't fit in the radio slot (at least without major modification) however, it will fit in front of gear shift in console with only minor trimming of the console hole.

You will need to make some brackets to mount the head unit and there is a good deal of cabling necessary to relocate things around and have enough slack to you can slide out with wiring attached. A long job but not really difficult - just be careful as you are trimming and keep checking the fit.

Taken with a mobile so hopefully it shows what is required.

The unit fits fine (the dash occasionally gets pushed up a bit on closing) and, due to the dash molding, the USB port on the LHS is hard to access.

I have also installed DVD units in the headrests to keep the kiddies happy on trips - and they are worth their weight in gold!
