Ml gearbox problems

Postby Antman on Wed Aug 06, 2008 4:00 am

Has anyone experienced gear shift issues, my triton from new (V6 dual cab manual) has had harsh shift 1st to 2nd especially, crunches, then thunks into gear, must say getting smoother (probably as it wears out). Dealership say nothing wrong, in fact when they compared mine to 2 others they claim mine was the best. Have moved my complaint to Mitsubishi, but they really do not seem to care, their response is to send a 'Regional service manager' to test drive it in a couple of months, can not give me a date when this will happen!. The whole response seems to be a bit lame and disappointing, do any of the GLX-R owners experience this as the vehicles they compared it to were GLX-R's. I have written Mitsubishi off and decided that their warranty will not be worth anything if this is their response to my concerns, I feel a bit gutted by this as the 5 year warranty did look good.:-)

If you throw the change "too quick", then yes, it has a bit of a moan and a clunk. If you miss though (clutch out before in gear properly, a bit too eager 8-) 8-) ), and it has a grind, it's a bitch to get in, declutch etc.

Antman sometimes you can be unlucky. I had an mk triton with only 7000 km and the syncro went on every gear. It would crunch every time i changed gears. hopefully this isnt the case with yours

Mine is a bit stiff to go into gears but doesn't grind or clunk. I have the V6 i don't know if it maybe has something to do with the petrol gearbox, but i don't know if the diesel gearbox is differnt all 2getha.

After all of 320km in the ML I can report that the gearshift is S...L...O...W.

Not at all like the MK which (once it warmed up) can be very quick.

I use 1st with the 33" never used to though.

I also use to have a very smooth gearbox buzzy even commented after driving mine. Since my last fluid change its been notchy into second though. I'll have to find out what the mech used and avoid it I think.

just for any ones interest ,replaced all oils the other week with the 47k service and fitted BP easyshift to gearbox as per BP web sit and noticed a definite difference in cold shift feel, might try castrol syntrax, but beware of what the dealers use for there oil supplies as oils aint oils

what spec oil are you guys using? on my old van I used castrol GL5 spec. Noticed that the Trtion's manual is only spec'd at GL3??
Definitely had a better feel with the GL5 after changing from GL3.
Heard of some crazy guys runnign them on ATF. hmmm. Beastie is 41000km on and I got no gearbox hassles, 1st change at 22500. Still, it get's a bit too slick when it's in low. Would like to try a GL5 on the 45000.

Used to run the toploader on ATF in the old falconian, made the shifts smoother than the (then) missus carolla... Did over 150,000km on ATF and sold the box to a mate after I stacked it... We opened the old girl up for a pre-fit inspection and it was gleaming inside...

I've found the clutch pedal to be poorly designed and makes selecting gears a touch harder. I like to push the pedal with the ball of my foot but the way the pedal shaft angles back means the top of my foot (toes) contact the shaft and it then feels like the pedal is fully depressed. If I move the contact point on the pedal closer to my toes, I find the clutch goes in that bit further and makes selecting gears a lot easier. I don't know if it's relevant but it works in my case.

When the actuator pipe on mine broke last year, I had to drive about 800km from eaastern botswana back to joburg without a clutch. pedal was on the floor... (ha, not the gas...) but it's been fine since then.

Even with the whine that had it replaced this week, it was very smooth on the shift...
