tailshaft shudder

Postby brenze87 on Mon May 11, 2009 6:22 pm

hey guys
after fitting the 2inch suspension lift i have now got that dreaded shudder in first gear. i have put up with it for a while and it does not bother me but am now afraid i will start wrecking uni joints. i remember reading about fixes for this but can not remember what the best solution was. would rather just pay someone to fix it first time the right way.

cheers

A tailshaft spacer & wedges should have a good effect, gearbox spacers in a really bad case - have a read of FSC's Dobinson's suspension thread as that talks about some of the fixes 8-)

Quickest and cheapest is spin the centre bearing. 14mm spanner, two nuts and a bit of pushing. Instant improvement. Then go gearbox and tailshaft spacers.
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

What greedy said. This made the biggest difference to mine.
And I have done the lot, Castor wedges / tailshaft spacer / rotate center bearing & 6mm packers under the gearbox

if you rotate the centre-bearing cradle 180 degrees on its mounts, it actually drops it by about 6mm or so and helps with the shudder problem - like greedy says it's dead easy to do 8-)

To the guys with tailshaft spacers? how and where did you get yours? i know some ppl have fabricated up their own. but i contacted Dobinsons in the eastern states and they told me to call Malaga springs and suspension, their WA supplier. who told me they wont sell me one as i have an ironman kit and they sell dobinsons gear???

I got mine direct from Dobinsons (Martin) in Sydney. I'd be giving him a call back to tell him the issues. Interesting, in these times that suppliers are turning down sales of any kind. Largely irrelevant what brand of suspension you have, I would've thought.
