Mud behind flares & Potential Rust Hazard (merged)

Postby FreestyleCab on Mon Jul 07, 2008 10:15 am

I was fitting my snorkel today and when I removed the drivers side flare I was shocked to find the bottom 150mm of the flare was full of mud!

Below is a picture showing the high tide mark of the mud on the bodywork.

Here is a pic of the flare with mud

It looks like I will have to remember to peel back the flare every now and again and blast it with the hose. I would hate to think what would happen to the paintwork if the mud was left in there indefinitely.

Potential rust hazard

Postby Diddy on Tue Oct 05, 2010 2:56 pm

I was just fixing my flare when this took me by surprise
Couldn't believe how much mud was trapped between the guard n the flare I think after the Geraldine trip everyone should be looking at there own flares n checking for mud build up
Both sides had about the same amount I'm glad I only have two flares n not 4
I have put up some pics of the build up unfortunately I scraped it all out n then thought gee I should take some pics so I tried to place it back in place as best I could

yep thats geraldine mud alright and by the amount i pulled from the gap between the flare and guard this doesn't suprise me.. as my cleaning journey continues pulling off the flares is on that list.. as well as the mudguards etc etc...

the skidpan i was on last saturday had a bit of mud left on it for memories.. nothing like a free undercar wash!

... as garth says... like unprotected sex.. (but worth it anyway  )

nice one DiD! So the flare all back attached and happy again?

that's why I bought myself one of these:

Makes it a bit easier to get up underneath stuff and get a good angle on it with the pressure blast. Still tempted to pull off a flare and see if I missed any though. Dealer serviced it today and seemed unaware it had ever been off road from some of the comments made so maybe I got it all. :?

That explains why mud keeps seeping out of the join above the mud flap each time I wash the car! Thanks

I used a wad punch and put 2 holes 1" in the mudflap where the mud & sand sits on the top it also allowes me to put a hose into the flare to riunse out the mud .

yea, asking someone up at geraldine how hard it was to remove their flares cause i reckon there would be a fair bit of mud up there and got a 'arrrrrrr she'll wash out'... So how hard/what is the processs to remove the flares??

My chassis rails are skill caked up with gravelly mud, they are practically impossible to flush.
