Understand where you're coming from but had you considered that muddies become no better than AT's once they wear down to 50%. You pay for 70% tread and actually only get 20% real life.
Go newies I say

While i agree with the sentiment to buy new ones... I disagree with your statement about 'no better than ATs''
It's the void between the tread blocks which makes the tyre self clearing, rather than just tread depth. A new AT will not outperform a 50% muddie (considering that a MT will often start with a greater tread depth anyways). Once the AT becomes a slick from bring unable to clear its tread, it won't matter how new it is. The bigger gaps between tread blocks will generally allow a MT to clear better, therefore offering superior traction to the now slick AT.

HT/AT on factory mags for daily running and MT on steelies for play. Better onroad handling and more fun on the weekends plus MT's will last you a very long time when used this way.

2 sets will work out cheaper in the long run.
but factor in the hoist, compressor, rattle gun and torque socket (as matts has or I wish ) and it gets dearer.
actually I can change out the second set in around 30mins with a trolley jack and a "t" handled nut remover.
hard work though.
