Mudder dilemma......advice please

Postby gmhl on Fri Dec 16, 2011 7:02 pm

Ok so it's time for me to trade in the old Coopers and get a set of mudders. I have been ringing around here in Townsville and found something out that was interesting.

I am looking at either BFG 265/75/R16 M/T or the Maxxis Bighorn 265/75/R16.

The price for the BFG's was $375 per tyre fitted etc which I thought was a bit expensive. Then the price I got for the Bighorns was $356 each fitted. Again pretty expensive I thought.

The tyre joint then rang me back to say that BFG M/T's are pretty much sold out world wide in that size and it will take at least 6-8 weeks to get them in. The Coopers are getting a bit light on so I need a tyre sooner rather than later.

My question is, for only $20 extra per tyre is it a good move to hold off and wait till the BFG's come in or do I get the Bighorns? Is there much of a difference between them in real world uses? I know BFG's are a great tyre but there seems to be a lot of good reports on the Bighorns here.

Any advice from the newtriton gurus would be great. Cheers.

Expensive compared to what I paid, but they are an excellent mud tyre from my experiences.

Neither. Why not look at a good tyre instead? :-)

Mickey t or Bridgestone.

Good, round, honest Tyres.

BFG's are arguably a better tyre than the Bridgestones. But, like most things, it all comes down to personal preference and availability.

The Mickey Thompson MTZ's are a fantastic mud tyre, and perform well both on and off road. The BFG MT's and the Maxxis BH's haven't got the same on-road manners as the MTZ's, but they're both highly rated tyres. Not sure if anyone has actually used a Dueller M/T on here.

Federal Couragia Muddies :D $280 a corner (recently too)

Har05l has the Maxxis muddies and is getting very good km's out of them as a full time tyre.....yet the sparky i use at work has the same tyre/same size on his dual cab using as a full time tyre aswell and only managed about 35k till they were at the tread markers.......go figure.

My muddies are now a dedicated 2nd set. I cant justify having them on all the time on road for them to wear out quickly.........I tried to compromise with my previous set of Mickey T ATZ's having an aggressive all terrain for on and off road.........barely got 40k out of them.......great tyre, poor wear IMO (others on here have had similar experiences aswell with Mickey T)
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

I'm with fridgie and mooons :D

The bighorns are an awesome tyre ;) . I've done 42k so far as a full time tyre and still think I'll get another 20-30k out of them before I get another set :P . They are good in all terrains and that includes the blacktop. To date never had a puncture or done a bead so for an apparent small brand name they kick ass

Have a look at these reviews:
http://www.offroaders.com/tech/AT-MT-Tires/MT-Mud_Terrains.htm

Not every tyre is on their list, but most are.

Makes some interesting reading when done independently.

I'm not saying the bighorns are bad, I'm just saying that the MTZ's handle a little better on road. have driven tri's with bighorns and others with MTZ's, and the MTZ seems to feel that little bit more planted IMO.

Yeah Fraz I use the Bridgies D673 and I can't fault them 8-)

My mate has a Pootrol with the Bighorns on it and regularly get further then him

And as for on road I kept up with an A/T wearing Homer through some slightly wet, very twisty stuff on the way back from Levuka. As for wear I probably have about 10K on them and they still look very chunky

But I love the look of the Mickey T's and if I can get them for the right price I'll get them next time in a 33
