cant find the sump plug

Postby keith and coral on Sun Oct 04, 2009 7:14 am

I am a new diesel ML triton owner, my mechanic told me that I should change the engine oil and air filter every 5000k.

I'm coming up to the 5000k mark and was having look under the car to try and find the sump plug to drain the oil and I couldn't find it.
Where is the sump plug?
Do I have to remove the bash plate to get to it?

Just confirming what I've read on the forum already, is the washer on the sump plug a one time use, and needs to be replaced each time the plug is removed?

thanks

Yes you need to remove the bash plate to get to it
YOu can use the sump plug more than once but you may find it gets a little bit of seapage. Better off changing it out.

yes.
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

and if you're going to be doing it yourself regularly, I 'd recommend a Fumoto oil drain valve 8-) Makes the job far easier and less messy ;)

F106 & F106N will fit (the N valve has a nippled extension that you can attach a drain hose to).

Cheers! 8-)

The 5000 oil change intervals sounds a bit keen.

Are they using oil from stock "salted" away in the sixties?

Mitsi suggested intervals are 7500kms, the first which is recommended to get rid of any product during the "running in" period. Consider that you have about a 10litre oil reserve and numerous euro vehicles are getting up to 30k intervals (my 2003 Vito was 22.5k) with normal driving, so the 15k intervals should be safe, esp. if you block the EGR.

Certainly change oil immediately if you suspect contaminants have got past the air filter, or the engine has had a gulp of water.

One thing I was discussing with a friend today was the high cost of fuel filters. I am considering a generic pre filter with a glass bulb as a means of extending the life of the factory unit. Never, touch wood, have had a blocked or contaminated fuel filter on a vehicle - petrol or diesel.

This thread will do.
I can't seem to find anything on first oil change, my 3.2 has done 3.5k and the oil is dirty.
I've had the 1.5k free service, that is basically just a check of things.
The next service according to my service book is 15k, there are oil changes at 5k and 10k for turbo petrol models, it does not say anything about an oil change for the 3.2 diesel before 15k.

I know this can't be right but going by the book it is.

That's correct Peter, every 15,000km, 20,000km in Europe.
If you're keen you can do one at 7,500km but best to use a genuine filter, I certainly will be and have the oil and filter ready to go.
If it's a manual check the oil at the level plug and if it's dirty like mine was[6,000km] you might want to change that too?
;) :)

I know I am dragging up an old thread here but in the triton service manual it has oil changes for the turbo petrol model as PeterT has said. What is this turbo pertol? I always thought it was a mistake and should read diesel.

Evolution motor. You can have one if you do the Dakar regularly and have a half decent chance of winning. Oh, and cough up about half a million big ones. For the rest of us it's just the stuff of dreams.
