I carry bikes on the back with the tailgate down and have heard of support cables snapping or is this an old wive tale? Does anyone know of products like "tailgate ex support" for triton or DIY methods chain or bars to support tailgate carrying part of a load?
I noticed the small ball joints sticking out on sides for struts too do these help I wonder?
There must be metal supports as standard figment on some models, I'm suspecting single cab model or O/S models from what I'm seeing on eBay.
Just browsing eBay and came across this tub for sale, have a look at the tailgate supports in the photo, also other shots of tub liners for the triton on eBay shows pics of tailgates with metal supports.
Ah ok like the hiluxes of old with a metal set! The cables seem to sit in same spot as the metal support as I was thinking to try fab some supports up but there doesn't seem to be any more anchor points further up the tailgate either.
Strange the US market had this covered already but in the end I'm looking to get a trailer I reckon and just start using an extra set of tie downs like gazman says.
Yeah my old mans 09 glx MN 2wd, has the metal support brackets instead of the wire. Try triton wreckers and see what they may have, I don't see this being a common part people are seeking.

Or ask Triton wreckers if they have, or can get the GLX metal supports
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.
I haven't had a close look at the metal brackets but are they any stronger than the cable? I've had my bike in the back and didn't have any doubts about the strength of the cable and I haven't heard of any failing either. I've got the ml and the rear tyre sits right on the edge of the tailgate too.
THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MAN AND A BOY IS THE PRICE OF HIS TOYS
Probably obvious, but the GLX metal brackets allow the tailgate to swing down vertical (so it will hit those rubber stoppers), I gather that all GLX-R's have the rear step, and as such the tail gate cant swing down as it would hit the step.
With the GLX, the brackets can be separated by swinging them up when opening the tailgate and the tailgate will then drop 180 degrees to vertical, so it almost touches the ground. If the tow bar is in then there will be an nice dent in the middle of the tailgate!
Do the GLX-R ropes allow for removal to drop the gate right down? I have a GLX-R tailgate and it looks like the ropes bolt on to the tub, but have not had a close look at a gate when on a vehicle.
Cant find anything in the manual about the full opening of the tailgate
I don't think it will be an issue the cable will be well & truly rated, the attachment point on tailgate & in tub would be my concern. I have not heard of them braking before, unless the cable has been damaged or frayed.
Life is what happens while you are busy making plans........

Hi GLRkenny I'm in Brisbane out ippy way in Greater Springfield Area thanks for the offer but I'll stick with the cables for now was more interested in seeing if anyone has bothered to use extra suports or had issues really.
Ok I call this myth busted if no one has had cables or tailgates rip off at the hinges under reasonable load i.e. 200-400kg across tray and tailgate I'm not convinced it's gonna happen at anytime soon. Cables/metal hinges must be rated for certain load rating otherwise it'd would be more common.
P.S. No longer listening to other people's hearsay after couple beers round a camp fire.
