Non-hubcentric Rims

Postby Joe on Mon Jul 26, 2010 11:08 am

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on non-hubcentric rims. I know there has been some limited discussion in another thread, but I want to get an idea of what you're running and whether you have had any issues running them.

I owned an NP Pajero for 5 years before the Triton with aftermarket alloys which where non-hubcentric without any hint of drama. I was blissfully ignorant mind you and had no idea about hubcentric rims back then.

I have just put on some King Wheels sunnies and after speaking with someone from there I was assured that there will not be any problems with running these rims on the Triton. Apparently all new vehicles come standard with hubcentric rims so any one who puts these on any 4WD will have the same questions. I was told that no sunraysa rims on the market can be run with hub rings.

Is it more important to make sure that alloys are hubcentric?

So are others running with non-hubcentric rims and have they had any dramas (apart from blue's old man) with bad vibrations or broken studs?

I should add that I have searched the net and also the newhilux and 4WD actions forums which have very little information that I could find.

Hey Joe.
In that thread I sent an email to dynamic and they stated that only alloys need to be hubcentric. I have their sunnies and have had no dramas but for my peace of mind I am ordering some hubcentric rings for $9 each. ;)

Thanks boycee. I was told you can't get them, so where are you getting yours from?

I think a lot of discussion came about due to my old mans experience - his insurer backed down but warned that because Mitsu fitted hubcentric steelies from factory, he would need hubcentric aftermarket steelies if he wished to continue cover with them - he left...

Perhaps a cautionary word to your insurer would be advisable...???

After the drama with Blue's old man......I did a bit of looking into weather or not i needed hub rings for my aftermarket alloys. I rang the head office of king wheels and spoke to a bloke there who swore blind that it was not at all neccessary to have hub rings and that no aftermarket wheel manufacturer would make wheels to suit all the different hub diametres on cars. Basically one size fits all type thing.

When i thought about it more after the conversation, its not like there is much of a hub for the rim to sit on anyway, we are talking in the area of a 5mm lip which wouldnt give all that much support for the wheel i don't think. :?

I also tried the technical hotline for the RTA........but well, government organisation, you can do the maths on the rest of that story  :|

Boycee, do you know if dynamic wheels do different sizes etc to suit all wheels. I know the triton hub is 67mm or there abouts from memory, but my alloys internal size is about 100mm, i think steel wheels are bigger, maybe 105mm or 110mm???? It would give me more peace of mind to have some i think, one less thing on my truck that could be considered illegal anyway
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

I actually decided to stop being lazy boycee and organised a set from King Wheels in brisbane (through a dealer). I will post up some info when I have it . Others may be interested in the dynamic ones though.

Had a call from my supplier today. King Wheels led me up the garden path  . I have been told (again) that hub-centric rings are NOT available for any steel wheel nor are they necessary. Apparently, even if you had one made there is not guarantee that it would work because steel wheels are made to locate on the lugs not on the centre bore which may not be perfectly centred. Not saying I agree, but this is what I have been told...twice :?

BTW - ADR is Australian Design Rules eroled.

Blues old man was told if he didn't have hubrings on his steelies they wouldn't insure him I was also told by a large alloy wheel supplier that I didn't need hubrings either on my alloys of all things . Before reading blues post didnt realise such a beast existed.
