MN Dual Battery

Re: MN Dual Battery

I just had a battery carrier made for my PB Challenger.
It is constructed from aluminium and fits behind the original battery.
I had to slide the OE battery forward, modify the plastic box and relocate the ASC BOX
but my Optima yellow top fits in quite easily.
I can find out if it will fit the MNTriton and if it does
I might be able to get more made if anyone is interested for $185 plus whatever delivery is involved.

Since this thread is alive and kicking something that may give ideas - as you would know Foresters (Subarus in general) don't have a lot of room so a club member came up with the "battery-in-a-bag" concept. The idea is to mount the second battery on a sheet of marine ply inside one of those tough canvas type zippered tools bags. Then carry the battery in the rear passenger footwell strapped to the rear mounting points for the front seat. I have a 90 amp/hr mounted this way all connected with anderson plugs. The advantage is that the battery does not have to remain in the vehicle all the time; the fridge and battery can be left at campsite (in case someone needs beer!); the battery and fridge can be moved to another vehicle in case of breakdown. Quite flexible actually.

I am about to fit a dual battery system in my MN using a Redarc smart start solenoid, my "house" batteries are going in the back of the ute, I have no room for what I want under the bonnet. The batteries will sit in the space between the front end of the tub and the end of the roller drawers.

I am looking around for a decent dual battery monitor that will give me a good idea of what charge is in each battery and the current going out, in my previous car I had a monitor that was just a row of LED lights that showed voltage only,I have seen a unit on the web somewhere that is a panel with a digital display and has a couple of 12v outlets on it, has anyone seen the type Im after???

Guys,
I am new to the site and leaving for a trip to the "centre" in 2 months. I live in Melb and am looking for someone down here that can do the dual battery install for me. I'm not game to tackle that as yet. The MN is only 3 months old but I need a second battery for my camper/frdge. Does anyone have any suggestions of where I could start? I live 5 minutes drive from an Opposite Lock store in Mitcham so that will probably be my first port of call.
Cheers

Peleroda, Any auto leccy should be able to sort that out for you mate, even if you supply the battery of your choice and the isolator for them.

Check out opposite lock as well, but sometimes "specialist" 4wd stores can be quite expensive for easy stuff like a second batt............from what i've seen anyway.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

Ok, so one year on from the last posting, has the situation with dual batteries improved?
I'm seriously considering a Triton (it'll be a lease) and would like to bundle in dual batteries but don't want to install the second one in the tub.
I've been trolling through various suppliers (arb, tjm, piranah etc) without luck - even opposite lock (mentioned earlier in this thread) doesn't have anything listed on their site.
thanks

Have a look back for posts from RonnieQ - he managed to get a second battery under the hood. A couple of others have gone with behind the back seat as another option.

Hi All,
Not sure if i am in the right place to ask this question I am new to these frum things.
I'm looking at getting a dual battery system for my MN I've been looking at lots of the different threads and the different ways that people have been able to do it mostly in the tray but I was wondering has anyone used the kit from 4WD SYSTEMS where the second battery is under the bonnet???
If anyone has can you tell me what it is like quality fitment etc, did you install yourself or get someone to do it for you?

This is what 4WD SYSTEMS quoted me and told me about their kit:-

The DIY kit has a fitting guide and comes with a 180amp Electronic isolator, powder coated Cradle kit (nuts bolts etc) and wiring kit. Cradle fits on the LHS, uses a 10" battery.
The Electronic Isolator controls the charging of both batteries, switching the Auxillary in/out of the charge circuit, depending on the state of charge of the Main battery. The main or starting battery has the priority.
For heavy duty applications (winches etc) we have a 450amp Isolator with heavier cabling. Electronically it is exactly the same as the 180amp unit, just a much more capable contact set controlled by the same circuitry.
Warranty is 3 years, unlimited kms on all parts.
Cost of kit is $362 (for 180amp kit) and $514 (for 450amp unit) plus $30 freight door to door.
Now, you can 'reverse roles' - the batteries are adjacent to each other, so you swap the leads around to make the 'new' battery the starter and that gives you a 12" slot to fit a good sized aux battery into.

Any info or input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Sorry, won't even pretend to understand any of that. All I knew is that I wanted a 2nd battery up front, capability for a 3rd in the trailer with the controller I wanted used. The dealer organised through the 4wd shop they use for installing after-market accessories. Used a Traxide 3 battery controller http://www.traxide.com.au/CWK_3B.html

Tight but it does all fit.

Tray was installed by Truracks in Penrith.
According to them, it's a Piranah tray [I didn't ask but it looks like part # BTMTV6] that bolted straight in without modification.

Some more pictures at here (hope that link works)

Hi all.

I have read through the various dual battery installs in this and other threads but can't seem to find any where, where the battery has been installed behind the rear seat.
I'm interested in installing 2 Remco RM12-105FT - it's a deep cycle AGM battery (105Ah) from http://www.federalbatteries.com.au/RM12-105FT/.
To control the charge etc I'm looking at a http://www.traxide.com.au/CWK_3B.html system. The battery in the 'trailer' will just be a second battery behind the back seat.
To monitor was thinking about a http://www.baintech.com.au/meters-monit ... ry-monitor
Any suggestions/ideas?
All help greatly appreciated.

Wirtzy, I've got mine behind the rear seat. 105AH AGM.

I think there is a pic in my shed...

also this link in my build has mine and 6irths setup behind the rear seat. 6irths is quite nice with a compressor setup also.

Mine is an ML but it shouldn't matter as long as you don't have the rear wind down window

LOL I think you just might be in the wrong thread mate haha.

And as for this thread.. I would just say keep it simple no need to go over board with big cable & super advanced systems :)

For those of you who've fitted the battery behind the rear seat - where did you feed the cable through from under neath into the cabin? Is there a grommet hiding there somewhere?
