Postby Bluellew on Sat Feb 07, 2009 2:48 pm

Hi Guys, can the factory locker be fitted to the Triton TD VR series afterwards? Also, what is the difference in the diff's that those models which HAVE a factory diff loc can't have a long range fuel tank fitted?Any mech's out there?

Hi Bluellew, 1st post, welcome..

Yes, there are various threads on diff lock. Basicly, dif locked VRs will have an open diff with a diff lock switch. Non-Diff locked ones have a hybrid LSD. Would have to replace the LSD with open diff to install factory diff lock. As the LSD is a very good LSD, most people who have them install the an aftermarket locker on the front diff.
You can have a LRFT with factory Diff lock, but you have to move the diff lock compressor. People here have done that too.
Having said all that, the weakest link in the triton in my case is definitely the driver! I've pushed the truck further than I though it could go, and it handled it all in it's stride. I was breaking anal hygeine codes, but the truck was fine!

I could add front diff lock to mine and when the going got tuff, it might make it slightly easier. But my priorities changed when I saw how good stock is.

I haven't heard of anyone that does a rear difflock for the ML yet. Front ones are done by ARB (Airlocker) and 4WD Systems do an auto locker. There may be others.
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

It ain't pretty being easy!!

Superselect or Easy Select 4WD.

Superselect is a fulltime 4WD like land crisers etc that can have 4WD selected without he centre diff locked. Allows you to drive in 4WD on bitumen without all the transfer case/driveline windup if you try it with the centre diff locked.

Essentially its an extra selection on the little stick !

So in answer to the original question, do they fit SS or ES, the answer is both. Only the centre diff changes, which is not the diff you're locking (front aftermarket).

Hi guys im new to this site, I came here in search of getting rear diff lockers for my ml triton.
When I brought the car june last year the sales guy said "You dont have to have the locker option fitted now, Fit it later"
Now come time to wanting one fitted, mitsubishi in townsville tell me that i cantand left me frustrated as. What a headache.
If anyone has had any luck with getting factory fitted afterwards can you let me know who to speak to.

Welcome baysie,
I dont think you can get an OEM locker fitted after delivery as its not a MMA fitted accesory, its fitted during manufacture in Tailand.
ARB make a front locker for our trucks but not a rear.
However after reading Sindo's modifications maybe they do.
PM him mate and see what the go is. Better still maybe Sindo can let us all know here???

There must be an aftermarket rear locker available from someone - there is a ML rear diff centre/carrier for sale on eBay that was "only removed to fit Diff Locker" :?:

thanks buzzy I think sindo means a front diff lock from ARB, I've been down that road already and as of yesterday ARB haven't developed a rear diff lock as such.

found out some interesting but sad info today... just to buy the omc factory parts without the wiring loom it will cost just over $5000.00 and about $800.00 for fittment.Thought about trade in as mine has only 12,000 klm and they would do the swap at cost seeing that the sales guy told me i could have them fitted later, would still be out of pocket $12,000  so unless there is cheaper alternative ill be waiting (trying to be patient) for an ARB rear locker to hit the market.

I think the ARB rear diff lock would be worth the wait - for 5 grand you could get both front and rear - and get a compressor as well..

I have that as an option if I can't find one at the right price with the factory rear diff lock fitted.
