i'd rather have a mushy box than an overheating one........but Is it too much to ask for a punchy & cool box though. :? :? :?

High Temps equal short life span.

At least i can now seek some advice from a specialist and target the issue - before i had no idea. We obviously need to mod the pump (higher vol / pressure) or the TC (smaller / tighter).

Thanks Chaser - those guyswith the dropped cooler model (who tow a lot and have A/T high temp alarms) may need to add a cooler but also use the other solution i am still looking for.
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

For the guys in Brisvagas, why dont we get together and compare oil pressure's in
boxs with and without a cooler????

its a starting point for a mod or two???

I have a brand new gauge that reads to 400psi (28bar) i dont know what STD is though.

If there is some interest i will post this again somewhere more approiprate

Would be interested in this- Starting to sound like we need to set aside a "shed day"
play with AT coolers, CV joints, brakes etc.

Does anyone know if there is a bleed valve or access point in the circuit to connect to for the guage?

I'll come to the shed day...but I'll probably be thirsty again

I haven't looked for an assess point but I have 11 different adaptors so 1 will surely fit somewhere :?:

I was talking a guy who is a mechanic & he told me about a mob in Melbourne that are supposed to be real experts with auto boxes. They do all sorts of things with body valves, ECU units, etc.

He could not think of the name but something like "sale automechanics" does this jog anyones memory :?: :?:

May be worth chasing up & possibly doing a group buy if located & possible. Just a thought.

Justin from the Chip-it company was looking at getting an upgrade and borngeek was talking to him i think. feel free Scuba to make some enquiries..... :D :D

Snow I spoke to Trevor at Wholesale Autos.

They do not have anything for the Triton yet but would like to develop something.

They advised me that if could have access to a ute for a day to have a good look at they might be able to come up with some improvements.

So any guys in the bayswater want to be the volunteer :?: :?: :?: :?: you might get things a little cheaper

Lock Up Torque Converter Kit

Postby duddits88 on Wed Dec 15, 2010 12:01 pm

Hi guys,

I'm thinking about getting a torque convertor lockup kit for my 06 Triton. Has anyone had any experienced with these? Do they improve Fuel Economy and cruising?

I've been reading a few magazines and I've heard good things.

Just wanted to know first hand from people who have them.

Cheers!

Here is some light reading for you....

Not for the Triton - but follows the same principal. I wonder if they can develop a kit for the tritons....?

5 SPEED MITSUBISHI PAJERO & TRITON CONVERTER LOCK UP SHUDDER
Rodney Hudson-Davies posted at 16/12/2010

Models listed below may suffer from torque converter lock up shudder which is a vibration when lock-up is applied. 4X4 models use a standard non off road Mitsubishi torque converter with the only addition being two extra pads but these units cannot handle applied loads, especially in off road and towing conditions. The pads that mount the converter onto the flex plate twist and buckle as the front converter cover is too thin. Hot spots are created where the lock up clutch runs inside the converter making it impossible to hold lock-up on fully. Wholesale Automatic Transmissions introduces our Heavy Duty Modified Torque Convertor Assembly that also address this problem by doubling front cover thickness, greatly increasing the rigidity of the pads and double kiln bronzing all the internal veins into place.

AFFECTED MODELS:

MODEL: TRANSMISSION I.D: CONVERTER I.D.:
NM/NP PAJERO V5A51-7-SB C2

TRITON R4A51-4-DHB RA

NM/NP PAJERO V5A51-7-AB RE

NM/NP PAJERO V5A51-7-AA RE, RH

NM/NP PAJERO V5A51-7-HCB RF

MK TRITON 4x4 V4A51-4-D1B RA

PA CHALLENGER V4A51-5-DB RA

long time no see, but glad you back!
so you remove the cooler to get the better pressure/lockup from torque converter???

LOL - Ta, been off the radar :D

No, turfed the factory unit (when I upgraded the FM intercooler) with a replacement about 2-2.5 times the capacity / surface area... No driveability concerns to date including some 'Lithgow mud digging' (read making a fool of myself where no one could find me for a day...) with as much grunt as the oil burner would offer for extended periods...!

Heat is the enemy of ANY auto trans IMHO... My lock up RPM hasn't changed at all before / after the change. I don't personally buy into any concerns of pressure drop issues, but I have to say (and have said before) I consider Auto's a bit of a black art and am not a specialist... Ask Snowman, we've discussed at length ;)

I know I give my poor truck 'what for' considering its a 2T diesel and it drives the exactly same as it did at 30K as it does now at 60K +

OK, spoke to the guys at Neville's Automatic Transmissions at Bankstown...and cut a long conversion short the result.....
"not much you can do as its all ecu controlled, there a good transmission box as it is, the thing is if you use by pass the relay and lock up the torque converter your more than likely throw a error code and that might put your triton in limp mode"

anyways the feeling i got was that no one wants do any mods/changes etc.... other then change the oil.

i think our best bet is with guys like that in melbourne, they have ecu kits etc, and do torque converter lock ups for most makes... just getting them to do one for the tritons.

anyone had luck talking to the guys in melbourne

Interesting stuff... I'm looking to buy a new MN diesel GLX-R at the end of the year and was thinking of going with the auto. :? So why is it that Mitsu gave the auto's less power? Is it a weak auto? And if it is... Why would you risk chipping it?

I will be fitting mine out as a sparky work horse and 4x4 to tour around Aus for a year, so it will be loaded up 100% of the time... Em i kidding myself getting an auto?

Srb.......i think this thread is mostly about the auto in the ML models.....which is only a 4 speed. Like Cowboy Dave says, the MN 5 speed is probably a good thing and would be a bit different in terms of driveability etc. compared to the ML

Like you, mine is always loaded up with tools or camping gear.........never had a problem. ;) Just expect to use alot of fuel

I nearly bought an auto glx-r mainly as it was my wife's preference.... I thought the same thing about the torque reduction of 50Nm. Is the gearbox weak? I don't think so (time will tell).
I can understand why Mitsubishi reduced the peak torque output. Look at it this way, say the first gear ratio in the auto is 4.1:1 (I cannot remember the actual ratio) OK. Then add the torque multiplication of the torque converter of say 2 or 3 times you then have a total of 4.1:1 x 2 or 3 which equals 8.2 or 12.3 times 350Nm or 2870 to 4305Nm feeding the output shaft of the slushbox! This is a pretty simplistic explaination but you could see why they would want to reduce torque a bit to preserve the diff and 4wd driveline  .
Happy to stand corrected on this, just my interpretation of why the torque reduction (but same peak power).
Manual transmissions obviously do not have the torque multiplication of a torque converter so the driveline can handle it more safely.
The voices in my head may not be real, but they do have some damned good ideas.

If it's feral, it's in peril.

MN turbo lag? What lag??

Hmmm sorry i'm a little lost... i don't really understand, will have to google how auto tran's works before i can get my head around it totally. So if peak power is the same it is left to the torque converter and gearing to get similar torque at the wheels as the manual... except for the losses in the torque converter...
