Anybody modified the side steps so they are higher and moved in slightly. I had a bit of a look and the steps will move in and up perfectly- just need to work out how to modify the brackets to do it. I could cut and reweld, but dont like loosing the little strength they already have.

Best mod I did to mine, was unbolt them after they went banana shaped - fitted ARB rails & steps, which are heaps stronger.........
Tip # 1 - Avoid stress & grief & low resale values with vehicles - do it once - do it right, buy a HILUX!!

funny you ask ,did the drivers side last week and got an extra 40mm in height and still have stone chip protection, just cut and weld 40mm out of the brackets ,then trim the mouldings and the alum step a bit and just looks like the factory steps without the expense, sits 5mm below the body seam ,iam saving money a suspension, bar and bash plate
can you the arb step to jack the car up or do they use the existing bracket holes

I must be missing something because to me making side steps from scratch looks just as hard as making rock sliders

Its harder to make sliders than side bars Aust.

Why,
Sliders need to be mounted of the chassis in order for them to be "true" sliders, easier said than done.
Hard to explain but here goes. They should be at least fixed to the chassis in three places, back/middle/front.
The chassis runs parallel with the body of the car from the back mount point to the center mount point. Then from there the chassis tapers in towards the front center of the car, If you have a look you will no what I mean. Much harder (but not impossible) to do than side steps which you can mount from the original location.
Would be interesting to see a few underbody pics of bubbalucci's to see how ARB have mounted them..... buddy old pal 8-)

But even mounting from the original location you'd have to measure it up and get it lined up right into the original bolt holes?

I know I must be wrong but I just cant really appreciate why :p

surely a person like me ,who always cuts twice and measures once can get it almost right, can get it to work then anybody can, brackets hold the step with only 2 screws each,so that can be a bit forgiving for bad alignment and cutting it at 40mm with allow you to put a spacer in the top bolt hole of the bracket so you can tension the bracket angle to level to allow for notso straight welding of the bracket angle ,iam more pleased with how the trim ends look, photos following

We STILL can't get the ARB steps over here!

OEC International (TJM dealers in UK) are actually fabricating some (side steps with rock-sliders and powder coated) for a mate of mine with a new Triton so hopefully they'll start to manufacture them for retail.
