Does your diesel blow smoke?

Postby martyboy on Fri Mar 21, 2008 1:45 am

Hey guys,
I know that many diesel engines will blow some smoke...particularly when unders ome load.

I had never noticed a triton blow any smoke and didnt notice anything during my several test drives.
Now I am seeing some smoke under acceleration...I goota say though that I do NOT give it a hard time at all...if anything I am going easy as its relatively new.
Could it be that this is expected? (dealer advised me that these new engines hardly blow any) Could it be poor quality fuel?
or sould I be heading back to the dealer for a checkup?
Its not like it happens everytime I take off but I have noticed it a bit lately out of the rear vision mirror.
Opinions? Experiences?

Depends on time of day maybe condensation,

get someone to stand behind and check the colour,

if its blue (PANIC)[sick engine] :(

if its black check the air filter or get the stealership to check the fuelling, :)

if its white and first thing in the morning probably condensation :)

if its white later in the day after it is warm (PANIC AGAIN)[head gasket] :(

You could just be unlucky and got "sloppy" fuel. Also common on a lot of diesels, even modern ones is for soot to build up in the exhaust then get blown out when you're revving high.
I haven't noticed smoke from mine, but that's a poor test as I can see other cars smoking but I bet they can't in their mirrors.

Well, its not a cold morning thing....its certainly under load...I have done 2500kms now and have seen it twice underload....the only way I noticed was the black trail i saw spewing out of behind the car......I am wondering if it has to do with the whole knocking noise in the engine....the one ppl are saing is the injection system going on and off. I get the noise alot in the bumber to bumper traffic.

I guess I will ask the dealership to give it the once over.

I've never seen smoke, even when towing a heavy load, but maybe like jitsuka says it's there but I can't see it..

there hasn't been any evidence of it on the hull of the boat, unlike the old Rodeo I used to have

Mine doesn't blow any smoke that I've seen - 4,000km on the odo now.

I think the 'rattle' is just the noise that some of these diesels make. I notice it with mine, particularly when its cold and if you try and lug it in too high a gear.

Particularly noticeable in 5th on a light throttle - but just sounds like the normal diesel clatter to me.

The old mans 3.0 patrol is the same, in fact most diesels I've been in are, its just a noise they make IMO.

FYI
My oldies are currently in SA.
There are too Pajero's and one Land Rover Discovery, all pulling caravans.
All fueled up at the same servo, on the said load of fuel both PJ's blew a bit of smoke but the Discovery shit itself.

In your case martyboy I would be guessing shit fuel!

London taxi drivers do that all the time. I've noticed diesel is hugely variable here. I've filled up with some Gull diesel and it was really rattly, but then changed to a different on and it was much smoother.

The rattle is a fuelling problem in the computer due to the EU4 standard emmision controls

Fuel in Aus is not up to the EU standard

I have noticed our Tri blows smoke under load and I reckon all of them do, but you can't see it...

The only way I noticed it was when I was driving late at night with a car behind me, and when in the right spot so I wouldn't get the headlight glare I could see it chuffing away a little, nothing to worry about, it's only pretty light, not like it's pumping it out..

Cheers, Shane.

Martyboy,
I thinks it time to drive it a bit harder. Diesels like to be worked a bit, its not uncommon if you drive them under light load for a while for them to blow a bit of smoke when you give em the berries. As Jitsukablue said, theyre just blowing out a bit of soot.
Mines done about 5000 km mainly heavy towing, I haven't noticed any smoke but I'd be surprised if it didn't blow a bit under load. As long as its not excessive, don't worry.;)

Rick, any evidence of problems with gull bio? I can't see how a max 20% blend (which is often 10%), is anything but beneficial. I've heard people trash it before, but I've not seen hard evidence. Everything I've read says bd only improves fuel lubricity and cuts some emissions.

Hi all,

All diesels blow smoke, it's only the particle matter that makes it visible. The colours nicely explained by Andyj. Personally I only use BP fuel, I can hear you all mumbling about the expense, but from personal experience have found it to be cleaner than most other suppliers. One thing I can't stand is the "off" smell you often get at distributors that don't look ofter their filters properly. I have also noticed the inherent rattle of the Mitsi to quieten down on BP fuel. Oh and as a foot note, don't let Mitsibishi take a sample of your fuel if you are putting a little unleaded and you want to make a warranty claim.

cheers to all

So MMAL said not to use it? MMAL on their website say so long as it's not over 10%. I can't understand their stance, as the fuel meets spec. I smell a conspiracy theory. BioD plants closing down, blame MMAL and others for putting the shits in the market.

SO your not using Biodiesel BUT are putting unleaded in with the diesel.

AND you have had a problem with a rattled engine.
before or after?
